Energy and utilities are the backbones of modern industry and our day-to-day lives. Electricity which comes from hydel power helps our trains run, supports our hospital’s function, and keeps our homes well-lit and comfortably warm/pleasantly cool, as the need might arise.
When we talk of energy and utilities, what comes to mind are oil and gas, power, and water. There have been several initiatives taken up by various Electricity Utility and Energy Technology companies such as Net Zero Carbon Cities, and Cyber Resilience and the Electricity Ecosystem initiative for global cybersecurity for the electricity industry.
Run-through: The sub-industries within Energy & Utlilities
1. Oil and Gas:
Some companies function closely towards identifying areas rich in natural oil and then transporting it to oil refineries. Crude oil and natural gas are the basic materials from which petrol is made. These could be government-owned companies or private players, but usually, the price of petrol is decided by governments. Usually, in the public sector, the policies of these companies are defined by the state.
2. Power and Utilities:
A power and utility company distributes electricity, gas, and water to households and commercial establishments. Such a company could belong to the public or the private sector. Electrical and civil engineers are more sought after as employees in such companies.
3. Renewable Energy:
The waste generated by us is largely considered as a source of fuel, also known as renewable energy, more and more nowadays. It also includes energy collected from geothermal heat, waves, tides, rain, wind and sunlight. By the end of 2020, renewable energy made up about 20% of the global electricity generation. In 2017, solar powered a third of all new generating capacity. The cheapest source of renewable energy is wind.
